| GOUGH TEMPEST & LOCKWOOD
Featuring Danny Gough from Mama Joseph, Steve Lockwood from Lick and John Tempest, if you are into great classic Rock bands like Santana, Rush, Free, AC/DC, and like things slightly off the wall then there is definitely something here for you. |
| THE INFORMERS
Their musical integrity is always present in their entertaining and deft live performances. The Informers perform a guaranteed quality set that never fails to deliver the very best in live blues, soul, R&B and funk. Check out their new CD or visit their website. |
| STASH
The band headlined last year’s Music For Life and have since been busy recording and performing including supporting the Artwoods. Their music is classic British rock, yet there is a subtle blend of psychedelia, country/blues and punk energy. They have a new CD “Six of The Best”, details available from their website. |
| THE BLACKJACKS
Featuring ‘Wanderin’ Wilf Taylor’ on harmonica, The Blackjacks are just as adept at laying down a mellow acoustic set as they are at pumping out a deeply danceable groove of infectious electric blues. All five musicians are also accomplished vocalists and their live performances are legendary. Their new CD “High Roller” has received critical acclaim. Visit their impressive website for more info. |
| PHIL NASH
The last bastion of genuine punk and urban rock, Phil performs classics from (amongst others) The Clash, The Velvet Underground and The Sex Pistols. With an authentic rough edge rarely seen these days, Phil is back at this year’s event by popular demand. |
| THE BRIGHTON BEACH BOYS
The Brighton Beach Boys were formed in 2000 by local actor and musician Ralph Brown. The star of films such as Withnail & I and Star Wars, he is a life-long Beach Boys fan who has pulled together the city''s leading musicians to recreate the amazing melodies and harmonies of the seminal west-coast band. |
| THE SOUL REVIEW
Dave Barnard’s renowned 9-piece soul tribute band. Formed over 10 years ago, the band have delighted audiences with their performances of Stax/Atlantic Classics from the greats – Aretha, Otis, Sam & Dave and many more. If you caught them at the Old Steine on Millennium night, you’ll know what to expect! |
| LENNA & THE SNAKEMEN
Raw, raunchy blues from this long-appreciated 5-piece band. Although some of the members have since gone on to other things - James, Cat Ballou, The Blackjacks, The Brighton Beach Boys, to name a few - we are delighted they have agreed to re-form just for this event. This may be your one chance this year to catch Lenna in full flight! |

| Thanks to Neil, who toiled throughout the day with a video camera on his shoulder, and arms, and back. He's never worked so hard! Thanks also to Tracy who took these superb stills. Also Thanks to Joe, who's pix were first up on site (and one still is! It's the one of the Brighton Beach Boys, which I've titled "Which one of these 88 keys do I press?" - I love it!). His help, along with everyone else who was involved, helped make the day what it was - fantastic! Barbara & Martin

| FROM THE ARGUS, TUESDAY, JULY 22nd, 2003. "APPEALING FOR MUSIC" Music For Life 2, The Portland Rock Bar, Portland Road, Hove, Sunday. Organisers didn''t think they could top last year''s event but they did. The six-hour fund raiser for Martlets Hospice, in memeory of local sound engineer Dave Room, raised more than £2,000 and rocked The Portland. Some of Brighton''s finest bands donated their talents and played with a passion that was infectious. Gough, Tempest and Lockwood kicked off the gig with a set of progressive rock. Next up were The Informers playing acoustic blues covers followed by Phil Nash, who served up some great rock covers. Rhythm and blues masters The Blackjacks were pure quality. As ever, the Brighton Beach Boys got everyone grooving to surf-pop classics. Nine piece band The Soul Review kept the audience on their feet. The night finished on a high courtesy of the brilliant Lenna And The Snakemen who reformed especially for the gig. The atmosphere was incredible, the bands brilliant and everyone dug deep to raise thousands for the Hove hospice. The memory of Dave lived on through every song and cheer. Jakki Phillips |

Music For Life 2 took 20 weeks of planning. There were 7 bands comprising 31 artistes. They played through a 3,000 Watt PA system. Scheduled at 7.35pm, Lenna & The Snakemen took to the stage at 8.06pm. Over 300 people attended. It took 24 volunteers to run the event on the day. Our photographer took 504 frames and used 15 rolls of film. 72 pints of ‘Music For Life’ beer were sold. There were 30 official sponsors who donated £1,105 in total. The event cost £815 to stage. £3,402 was raised and The Martlets has received £3,500. £192 has been held as a ‘fighting fund’ for Music For Life 3. |
Music For Life was initiated by the sad loss of Barbara's partner, Dave Room, in 2002. A well-known and respected sound engineer, Dave ‘did the desk’ for many bands in and around Brighton over some twenty years. For many, he was synonymous with The Richmond (now The Pressure Point) as the resident engineer. I had known Dave over this time starting when he used to engineer The Moondogs at The Kensington. He also toured with us and that was dangerous! He had a wicked sense of humour and never lost his temper even under the most trying circumstances. He was a sucker for the old drummers' trick of asking for the bass drum mike to be adjusted, then, just when Dave''s head was inside the base drum, giving it a good thud - he always fell for it! Dave sadly lost his fight for life with dignity and compassionate care from The Martlets. Music For Life is dedicated to raising funds for, and awareness of, The Martlets and the wonderful work done by all who work and volunteer their time there. Martin |
